Mitford M. Mathews (center), author of "A Dictionary of Americanisms" and other books about the English language. Mr. Mathews served also as a lecturer in the University of Chicago's department of Linguistics (1951-1957), as an assistant editor of the Dictionary of American English, and head of the Dictionary department at the University of Chicago Press (1944-1956). He is pictured with Robert Rosenthal (left), curator of Special Collections in the university library, and Robert Wadsworth (right), professor in the Graduate Library School.
