Mitford M. Mathews (right), author of "A Dictionary of Americanisms" and other books about the English language. Mr. Mathews served also as a lecturer in the University of Chicago's department of Linguistics (1951-1957), as an assistant editor of the Dictionary of American English, and head of the Dictionary department at the University of Chicago Press (1944-1956). He is pictured with Robert Wadsworth (left), professor in the university's Graduate Library School.
