Medal awarded to Mary McDowell by the government of Lithuania. Ms. McDowell was head of the University of Chicago Settlement House in the Back of the Yards neighborhood of Chicago from its founding in 1894. She was an advocate for unionism, safe working conditions, women's suffrage, and racial equality.
