Cyclotron, 1940-1946 1
II: Buildings and Grounds
The cyclotron at the University of Chicago seen from above. The machine is capable of imparting extremely high velocities to atoms, thus producing artificially radioactive substances or beams of deuterons. The 80-ton machine is surrounded by tanks of water three feet thick, which absorb the energy produced and help protect the workers from it.
