Philanthropist and University of Chicago Alumni Shirley Farr, for whom the camp is named, was involved with the University of Chicago Settlement League, a voluntary association supporting the work of the University of Chicago Settlement House in the Back-of-the-Yards neighborhood. In 1923, Shirley Farr provided $3,000 for the purchase of land for what became Camp Farr, a summer camp for children located near Chesterton, Indiana.
