Description | Temple of sun-dried bricks (2100-1900 BCE) at Ishchali, northeast of Baghdad. Recessed niches on either side of the doorway that leads into the sanctuary. A ledge at the rear once held a cult statue. Baked bricks, visible in the foreground, were placed around the sun-dried brick foundation to protect it from rain. Excavated by the Iraq expedition of the University of Chicago's Oriental Institute. |
