Professor William Gardner Hale portrayed the Spirit of Gothic Architecture. As part of the University of Chicago's Quarter-Centennial celebration, an intricate masque titled "The Gift" with 250 participants was performed in the Women's Quadrangles. Allegorical scenes included: The Spirit of Gothic Architecture; The Gothic Characters; Alma Mater and the Persons of the Masque; Youth; The Lake; The Cloud and Rain; The Sun Chariot; The Moon; The Harvesters; The Treaders; The Contestants of the Olympic Games; The Dancers of a Persian Romance; The Spirit of Worship; Knowledge; The City; and, The Cycle of Youth.
