| Description | Lieutenant Colonel Melbourne W. Boynton, an Army Air Corps flight surgeon in World War II. Dr. Boynton researched high altitude parachute jumping as part of his work developing flight safety and survival techniques. He died August 19, 1944 after jumping from an altitude of 43,000 feet, in an attempt determine survivability of parachute jumps by B-17 crews. At that time, he was on a leave of absence from the University of Chicago where he was an instructor in the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. |
