John J. Mitchell, chairman of the Illinois Merchants Trust Company, and member of the John Crerar Library board (1900-1927). A noted philanthropist, Mr. Mitchell financed the construction of the Mitchell Bell Tower at the University of Chicago, which contains the Alice Freeman Palmer chimes, bells named in honor of the university's first Dean of Women.
