Description | Funeral services for Ernest DeWitt Burton, president of the University of Chicago (1923-1925), were held on campus 28 May 1925. At 2:00 p.m., the funeral procession proceeded from Harper Library along 59th Street to University Avenue. At the President’s House, the casket was brought out, carried by eight pall bearers who were: Nathaniel Butler, James Henry Breasted, Henry Gordon Gale, Edgar J. Goodspeed, J. C. M. Hanson, Earnest E. Irons, Charles H. Judd, and Amos A. Stagg. While chimes in Mitchell Tower tolled, the procession continued down University Avenue, which was lined with students and the public, to Mandel Hall. |
