Marcel Schein, professor in the department of Physics and in the Enrico Fermi Institute for Nuclear Studies, and director of the Laboratory for High Energy Physics and Cosmic Radiation at the University of Chicago. He is pictured with a gondola which holds 800 pounds of emulsion plates used for tracking cosmic rays. Carried by a balloon measuring nearly 50 stories high (the world's largest), the gondola was launched in the Caribbean January 30, 1960 from the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Valley Forge and remained airborne at 22 miles for over 5 hours.
