Description | Chains of thorium atoms separated by an organic molecule are seated on a thin carbon film (one tenth of a millionth of an inch thick). In each chain, the smallest white dots represent a single atom. Larger white dots are probably aggregates. The micrograph was obtained using one of the atomic resolution scanning transmission electron microscopes developed at the University of Chicago. |
