Physicist Leo Szilard (right) worked with the late Enrico Fermi to achieve the initial self-sustained chain reaction of nuclear energy at the University of Chicago, December 2, 1942, which led to the development of the atomic bomb. He is pictured with Norman Hilberry (left), director Argonne National Laboratory (1957-1961) at the university's Stagg Field.
