Nicholas Metropolis, physicist, professor of Physics, and founding director of the Institute for Computer Research at the University of Chicago. Metropolis was also the leader of the group at Los Alamos National Laboratory that designed and built the MANIAC I computer in 1952, and the MANIAC II in 1957.
