Arend-Roland comet, C/1956 R1 (Arend-Roland) 2
II: Buildings and Grounds
Comet Arend-Roland has two tails. The main tail points away from the sun, its length estimated at 50,000,000 miles by George Van Biesbroeck, professor emeritus of Astronomy at the University of Chicago. However, its most unusual feature, he says, is a long narrow jet which points toward the sun. Photograph taken at McDonald Observatory with a 10-inch Cook lens.
