| Description | Photograph of the great Aurora taken the night of August 19 with a wide-angle camera designed by Jesse L. Greenstein and Louis G. Henyey. The camera has a field of 140 degrees in diameter and thus is able to photograph most of the sky at one time. The three long shadows converging toward the center are from the supports for the plate holder, which can be seen at the center. The exposure times were five to fifteen seconds in length, aperture of f2. The stars Vega, Deneb and Altair, together with the handle of the Big Dipper, are visible. The photographs were taken by Stewart Sharpless and William W. Morgan of the University of Chicago’s Yerkes Observatory. |
