Corona of the sun. Photograph taken by astronomers William A. Hiltner and Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar on the Yerkes Observatory expedition to Pine River, Manitoba, Canada, July 9, 1945. The camera was equipped with a 4-inch lens; exposure was 20 seconds. Two-thirds of corona (outer envelope) which extended 2,000, 000 miles beyond the sun’s surface is pictured.
