Corona of the sun. Photograph taken by astronomers William A. Hiltner and Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar on the Yerkes Observatory expedition to Pine River, Manitoba, Canada, July 9, 1945. The camera was equipped with a 4-inch lens; exposure was 5 seconds. The sun’s inner corona is pictured. Skies had cleared just before the eclipse, which lasted 37 seconds. All other astronomical expeditions in Canada ran into bad weather and did not get pictures.
