| Description | Seventh Convocation of the University of Chicago, July 1, 1894, the first to be held out-of-doors. Albert A. Michelson, professor of Physics, and the first American to win the Nobel Prize in Science is pictured at the lectern delivering the address. Among those seated on the dais (first row): William Rainey Harper, university president (3rd left); Martin A. Ryerson, board of trustees president (second row, from left); businessman Silas Cobb; George C. Walker, trustee; economist James Laurence Laughlin; William Gardner Hale, professor of Latin; and philosopher and educator John Dewey. The future chair of the department of Physics, Henry Gordon Gale, was awarded an Academic College Certificate, and Frank R. Lillie, later Biological Sciences dean, received his Ph.D. The buildings to the right are Goodspeed and Gates-Blake Halls and the Midway Plaisance is in the background.
