| Description | In autumn 1919, the British Educational Mission to the United States visited the University of Chicago to examine ways to create closer ties between British and American educational institutions. British delegation members included: Dr. Arthur Everett Shipley, vice-chancellor, Cambridge University; Sir Henry Miers, vice-chancellor, University of Manchester; Reverend Edward Mewburn Walker, librarian of Queen’s College, Oxford University; Sir Dr. John Joly, Trinity College, Dublin; Caroline Spurgeon, Bedford College, University of London; and, Rose Sidgwick, University of Birmingham. American representatives were: Elihu Root, chairman; Donald J. Cowling, president of Carleton College; University of Chicago members, James Rowland Angell, Ernest DeWitt Burton, Richard G.
