Description | Unidentified student activity dated circa 1908. Members of the crowd carry signs referencing current events or popular culture. One alludes to Jack Johnson, who became the first African American heavyweight champion of the world in 1908. Another refers to William H. Taft (Bill Taft) who was elected U.S. president the same year. Other signs contain names of fictional characters, such as that of the comic strip figure Little Nemo, and Nellie the Beautiful Cloak Model, a character from a 1906 melodrama.
