Description | McDonald Observatory of the University of Texas located atop 6,800-foot Mount Locke in the Davis Mountains will be dedicated May 5, 1939. The observatory, which the University of Texas built with a bequest from the late William Johnson McDonald, Paris, Texas banker, is 71-feet high surmounted by a hemispherical dome 62-feet in diameter and weighing 115 tons. The 82-inch reflector telescope is presently the second largest in the world. Astronomers of the University of Chicago led by Dr. Otto Struve, Director of the Yerkes Observatory, will provide staffing. |
