Chicago businessman and philanthropist Charles H. Smiley donated a quarter of his fortune to establish the Charles H. Smiley Scholarship at the University of Chicago. Growing up in impoverished circumstances, Mr. Smiley expressed the hope that his gift would support the university education of bright but disadvantaged students, particularly African Americans.
