Description | In an unusual Atomic Age dilemma, the University of Chicago is offering a 100-million volt atom smasher for sale on an over-the-counter basis. The unit weighs 200 tons and will be sold, if desired, with an additional 300 tons of concrete shielding. University of Chicago physicists said that this Betatron, built in 1950, is still a fine research instrument, but is not getting the kind of use it should because of shifting interests of scientists at the institution. |
