| Description | At the Phi Beta Kappa Convocation of Brandeis University, 8 October 1961. Honorary degrees were presented by university president Abram L. Sachar (center) to Gunnar Myrdal (left), professor of Economics at Stockholm University (Doctor of Laws), and to physicist Leo Szilard (right), of the Salk Institute for Biological Studies (Doctor of Humane Letters). Dr. Szilard worked with the late Enrico Fermi to achieve the initial self-sustained chain reaction of nuclear energy at the University of Chicago, December 2, 1942, which led to the development of the atomic bomb. |
