William Rainey Harper, professor and head of the department of Semitic Languages and Literatures (1892-1906), and first president of the University of Chicago (1891-1906). The picture appeared in the Chicago Daily News, 1932, with the notation that Dr. Harper, who died in 1906, was to be honored at a memorial chapel service October 1, the fortieth anniversary of the university’s opening.
