Cyclotron Forging Plates 2
II: Buildings and Grounds
The plates from which the 2,700 ton, 170-inch pole diameter magnet for the University of Chicago Cyclotron will be assembled are forged at the Bethlehem, Pennsylvania plant of the Bethlehem Steel Company from large ingots of carefully produced low carbon steel. Here two ingots are taken out of the furnace where they have been heated to the correct forging temperature. The largest ingots used for the Cyclotron measure 108 inches in diameter and weigh 435,000 pounds a piece.
