Astronomer Gerard P. Kuiper designed the infra-red spectrometer which is used for the study of Mars and the rings of Saturn. It is shown attached to the 82-inch reflector telescope of McDonald Observatory. A recording meter and amplifier are on the table; a crystal-controlled constant frequency unit is on the floor.
