Description | Cunningham comet, C/1940 R2 (Cunningham). Extract from a letter of Dr. George Van Biesbroeck: The prints are enlarged five times from the original plate obtained at the Yerkes Observatory 24 December with the 24-inch reflector. The bright nucleus throws off a short tail away from the direction of the sun. On that particular night, the comet was just at the limit of naked-eye visibility. It should become visible in the west by the end of this month, shortly after sunset. |
