Series | III: Events |
Description | Administrators, faculty, and trustees of the University of Chicago photographed at the American Red Cross Mission to Russia headquarters, Hotel D’ Europe, Petrograd. From left: Lieutenant-Colonel Frank Billings, M.D., head of Rush Medical College, and the Red Cross Mission; Samuel Harper, professor of Russian language; Major Harold H. Swift, board of trustees member; and Major Wilber E. Post, physician. In Petrograd, Mr. Harper was the general man-of-all-work, his knowledge of Russian affairs and language, and people gave him an extraordinary opportunity for service. The others were members of the American Mission. All four returned to the United States in October. It is unquestionable that the indirect influence of the university in Russia recently has been greater than that of any other American institution. |
