Description | Astronomers Christian T. Elvey (seated), Paul Rudnick (standing), and Helen Mead Pillans (at the radio) on May 27, 1933 wait next to the Yerkes Observatory 40-inch refractor telescope which will capture light from the star Arcturus and direct it into a photocell of the photo-electric photometer placed on the table. The resultant current will be transmitted over phone lines to Chicago where it will activate the lights of the "Century of Progress" during the evening, thus officially opening the world fair. |
