Nippur Expedition 43
III: Events
Donald McCown, field director of the University of Chicago-University of Pennsylvania joint expedition to the city of Nippur in Iraq pictured with one of the largest early dynastic Sumerian statues every discovered. The eyes of the figure (30 in.) still contain bitumen used to hold inlay now lost, but presumably of shell and lapis lazuli. The brows were inlaid with a mosaic of green stone, of which a small portion remains.
